No Walls and the Recurring Dream: A Memoir, Ani DiFranco
Review âAfter reading this funny, honest account of [Ani DiFrancoâs] life up to age 30, itâs clear that though her choices may not be for everyone, theyâre part and parcel of her integrity and creative path.â â"The Washington Post  âAni DiFranco has spent decades challenging the status quo, standing up for what she believes and creating honest, raw music. Her memoir is an extension of these passions. . . . No Walls and the Recurring Dream is unapologetic, steadfast, and vulnerable. Itâs as if DiFranco has invited you into the living room of her New Orleans home to have a long discussion about how she got to where she is.â â"Associated Pressâ[DiFranco] manages to shed new light on how a young, talented woman created enough momentum to slingshot herself beyond her townâs suffocating gravitational pull and create an entirely new solar system, populated with an orbit of planets and moons of her own devising.â â"Rolling StoneâAni DiFranco has written a memoir as fierce, freewheeling, and passionate as her music. Like Patti Smithâs Just Kids and Bruce Springsteenâs Born To Run, No Walls and the Recurring Dream charts the evolution of an artist whose voice couldnât be suppressed by poverty, by misogyny, by record executivesâ"and we hear it, loud and true.â â"O, the Oprah Magazine"[Ani] DiFranco chronicles her rise to fame with engaging candor. Fending for herself by age 15, she survived each unusual day with ingenuity and perseverance. . . . DiFranco is a natural storyteller, infusing these pagesâ"with their frequent offbeat anecdotes, unusual characters, and significant episodesâ"with wit, humor, and perspective. She also intersperses the narrative with some of her most notable poetry. DiFranco has defied convention yet remained true to herself. A must for her fans, this riveting, thought-provoking work will also appeal to anyone who enjoys a well-written autobiography."â"Library Journal, starred review"The Grammy-winning [Ani DiFranco] recounts the eventful story of her life as a musician and feminist political activist. . . . Interspersed throughout with feminist/political musings and anecdotes about such music legends as Pete Seeger, Prince, and Bob Dylan, DiFranco's tale celebrates both independent music and an unconventional life daringly lived. A refreshingly frank and free-spirited memoir from a feminist icon."â"Kirkus Reviews"[DiFranco] makes her literary debut in this powerful reflection on her life and career. . . . Throughout, DiFranco writes of her self-doubts and romantic hardships. . . . Honest and passionate, DiFranco's memoir will resonate with her many fans."â"Publishers Weekly Read more About the Author Ani DiFranco is a Grammy-winning musical artist and feminist icon recognized for her poetry and songwriting which pierces social convention and challenges the status quo, as well as for her social activism and political engagement. You may appreciate browsing this book while spent your free time. Theexpression in this word renders the reader seem to see and read this book again and still. To this Ani-fan who rushed out to pre-order this book, this is an interesting read. It's hard to put down and I learned a lot about Ani Difranco from a very intimate angle. However, it's not what I expected, ⦠which is ok because it's obvious she put her heart and soul into this. I was expecting more insight into her songwriting technique and I hoped to learn more about what it took to write as well as she did at such a young age. I wish she had incorporated the names of songs she was writing at the time and any struggles she had with particular songs or albums. When she did mention the album titles, it almost seemed as if she were saying, "and by the way, this is when X album was released." Give me more, Ani! Give me more! The writing, although interesting, was a bit frenetic and disorganized at times. In the first half of the book, it was a little tabloid, with (probably) unnecessary jabs at Michelle Shocked, Tori Amos, Suzanne Vega, Bob Dylan, and others. Don't get me wrong, I ate it up.If you are an Ani Difranco fan or just curious about this genius, you will very much enjoy this quick read. It was a great peek into the world of the indie folk scene. Often it was an interesting deep dive into Ani's brain.I also enjoyed the MixTape she released with this book. I have grown up with Ani Difranco. She has created the soundtrack for my inner life and experiences since the early 90's. Her voice, rhythm and lyrics have sustained this country girl from Oklahoma as she inspired me to live authentically and speak my truth in a part of the country in which conformity and conservatism has so far reigned over free thinking and progressive ideas. I have grown right along with Ani with every record she has released. I am a devotee (even though I realize Ani is a little ambivalent about fans) and have gone to every concert she has had within driving distance over the past 20 years. I raised my two kids on Ani, creating wonderful family memories as we took many road trips to concerts. A particularly poignant trip was to Eureka Springs, Arkansas, for the Vote Dammit tour where Ani and the Indigo Girls played the same stage that night. We were in the audience in Columbia, Missouri when Ani went back stage and came back with a book she was reading about masculine and feminine energy and read to us from the book to calm our asses down because the audience was screaming and singing along too loudly. And the outdoor concert on the Mississippi River, under the Arch in St Louis, when someone handed Petah (as a baby) to Ani on stage at the end of the show brought tears to my eyes. My greatest pleasure has been to see Ani play, several times, at the intimate, Cains Ballroom in Tulsa. The song Shameless helped me to understand my own sexual preference for women. The courage shown in the way Ani lives her life helped me to have the courage to come clean to my husband and arrange a parting that was amicable. We were able to continue to co-parent with mutual respect. I now watch my adult children living their lives with great courage, responsibility, independence and truth and know that Ani's music has something to do with that. Ani helped me raise my kids with a very important point of view that values humanity, justice, intelligence and even rebellion over the shallow values of capitalism and the pursuit of material objects. My son is now living in southern California with his husband, and my queer daughter is living in Brooklyn and working as an independent filmmaker and is a fierce feminist. I share all this because I feel deeply grateful for the art Ani has shared with us all these years. And now, with this memoir, No Walls and the Recurring Dream, Ani has gifted us with an intimate experience of her journey. Reading along with Ani's audio book as I am holding the actual book felt like getting to sit down with Ani and listen to her share the stories, people and experiences that have shaped her and her life. Thank you Ani. This book is a sweet and soulful gift to us. And for those of you who have not spent the past 25+ years with Ani's music as your companion, I highly recommend this book as a singular example of a woman who is brave enough to be vulnerable, and tough enough to withstand the pain of this world while keeping her truth and soul intact. What an example for all of us! No Walls and the Recurring Dream: A Memoir PDF
